The Pierce College tennis team beat Glendale College at the tennis courts on campus Feb. 23 in Woodland Hills, 5-4 in match play.

Glendale’s Emanuel Hang, who has come back from an ACL/MCL last year, beat Pierce’s David Castillo in two tough sets, 6-2, 6-4.

“The first set went really smooth,” said Hang. “ In the second set, I put myself out of some games. I lost focus and made a couple of easy mistakes.”

Missing three players from their team, Glendale went on to win four out of six sets in singles play.

“We have to get the team healthy and improve our play,” said Hang.

Pierce’s Eugeny Zakaharu match against Glendale’s Michael Astorian, proved to be highlight match of the afternoon.

“I made some good forehands and slices,” said Zakaharu, who lost to Astorian, 1-6, 6-3, 6-7. “I can tell what I did wrong. I made some bad overheads and volleys.”

Zakaharu’s boisterous play gained fans as the match went on. Distracting every fan, Astorian was able to stay focus and come out with the win.

“I’ve played against guys like that before,” said Astorian. “You can’t let that get to you. He’s a good player, but we were both off today.”

Pierce head coach Rajeev Datt felt optimistic about his young teams’ play.

“We’re doing great,” said Datt. “ We’re playing shorthanded and still doing well. I loved Eugeny’s [Zakaharu] heart. Patrick [Massey] came through for us. David [Castillo] played a tough at number one [court], and he did well.”
