In addition to the cost of the course, Pierce will also be paying for counseling and mentoring. The total cost for these services will be around $12,000; nearly half of the money will be used for counseling that will continue through December.

Janet Duenas is an academic mentor for PD 15C and was excited to be a part of the program. After graduating from Pierce, she went on to California State University, Northridge and is now working toward a master's degree from University of La Verne.

"I think it's fulfilling to help students," Duenas said. "A student that's an athlete is a student nonetheless."

"It's a nice time to bring the campus community together to really assist this group of students and get the students to understand what their role and responsibility is to the campus as well," Roberson said.
